기독교 세계 안에 있는 대다수 사람들이 가지고 있는 신관(神觀)이 무엇인지 나는 잘 알지 못합니다. 단지 내가 살고 있는 작은 세계와 내가 접하며 지내는 여러 그룹의 사람들로부터 추측해볼 따름입니다.

내가 부딪치게 되는 기독교 사회에 널리 퍼져있는 신관은 우리가 성경에서 찾아볼 수 있는 하나님에는 다소 미흡한 것이 사실입니다. 그는 모든 면에 인자하시고 주된 속성이 사랑이라고 할 수 있는 일종의 하늘의 할아버지와 같은 분으로 여겨지고 있습니다. 물론 성경을 보면 하나님의 사랑에 대해 강조해주고 있을 뿐 아니라 하나님을 사랑이라고까지 말하고 있습니다.

그러나 내 생각에 이는 성경이 보여주는 하나님의 온전한 성품을 잃어버리는 위험에 빠질 수가 있습니다. 이는 매우 위험한 우상이 될 수도 있습니다. 예를 들어, 만일 우리가 하나님의 거룩함이나 하나님의 주권 혹은 하나님의 진노나 하나님의 공의를 모호하게 만들고 우리가 좋아하는 하나님의 속성만을 취한다면 그리고 우리를 두렵게 하거나 우리를 불편하게 만드는 속성들을 거부한다면 우리는 하나님의 진리를 거짓으로 바꾼 것이 되는 것입니다. 그리고 사실상 우상에 해당하는 신을 섬기는 것이 되는 것입니다. 이는 나무나 돌 혹은 놋으로 만들어지지 않은 것이기에 단순하지 않은 우상이긴 합니다. 그러나 우리가 섬기는 하나님의 개념은 하나님 바로 그분과 일치하는 개념이어야만 합니다.

나는 수년간 신론(神論) -하나님의 성품- 에 많은 심혈을 기울였습니다. 그 동안 세권의 책을 집필했는데 그 책들은 모두 성부 하나님(God the Father)의 성품을 다루는 것들이었습니다. 하나는 ‘하나님의 거룩함’이라는 책이고 또 하나는 ‘하나님의 선택’(이는 하나님의 주권을 다루고 있는 책임), 그리고 최근에 쓴 책으로 ‘하나님의 성품’(이 책은 하나님의 속성들을 다루고 있는 책임)이라는 책이 있습니다. 내가 이 책들을 쓴 것은 현재의 기독교 세계에 자리 잡고 있는 하나님의 존재에 대한 무시와 왜곡이 위험하다는 생각이 들어서였습니다.

우리는 예수님이 누구인지 알고 있습니다. 그리고 최근 들어 성령운동이 상당히 주목을 받게 된 것도 사실입니다. 그런데 성부 하나님에 대해서는 거의 무시하고 있습니다. 여러분은 많은 그리스도인들이 구약성경을 무시하는 것을 볼 수가 있을 것입니다. 구약성경이 보여주는 전 역사는 주로 성부 하나님의 계시입니다. 신약성경에 그렇게 강조되고 있는 성자 하나님과 성령 하나님에 대한 모든 것은 구약성경에 나타나 있는 성부 하나님에 대한 지식을 전제하는 것입니다. 내 생각에 기독교 공동체에 필요한 우선순위는 하나님의 성품에 대해 더욱 이해하는 것이 아닌가 생각합니다.

    I don't know what the majority view of God is in the Christian world. I can only guess from the small universe in which I live and the exposure that I have to various groups of people.

  I certainly encounter a view of God that is widespread in the Christian community whereby God is somewhat reduced in scope from the biblical portrait that we have of him. He is seen as a sort of celestial grandfather who is benevolent in every respect and whose chief characteristic -- and sometimes only attributes -- is the attribute of love. We know that the Bible certainly put an emphasis on the love of God and even goes so far as to say that God is love.

  But I think we are in grave danger of stripping God of the fullness of his character as it is revealed in Scripture. This becomes a not-so-subtle form of idolatry. For example, if we obscure the holiness of God, or the sovereignty of God, or the wrath of God, or the justice of God, and sort of pick and choose those attributes of God that we like and then deny those that frighten us or make us uncomfortable, we've exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and we are worshiping a god who is in fact and idol. It may be a sophisticated idol -- it's not one made of wood or stone or brass -- but, nevertheless, the concept of God we worship must be a concept that agrees with the God who is.

  I've been on a crusade for years to focus attention on the doctrine of God -- the character of God. Three of my books deal with the doctrine of God the Father: The Holiness of God, Chosen by God (which focuses on God's sovereignty), and the latest one, The Character of God (which deals with the attributes of God). I wrote them intentionally as a trilogy to emphasize the character of God the Father because I think we are in grave danger of his being overlooked or distorted in the contemporary Christian world.

  We have some idea of who Jesus is, and the charismatic renewal has brought much more attention to the Holy Spirit in recent years. But we almost systematically ignore God the Father. You also find that many Christians ignore the Old Testament. The whole history of the Old Testament is the revelation chiefly of God the Father. Everything we read of God the Son and God the Holy Spirit --so amplified in the New Testament-- presuppose the knowledge of God the Father that is given to us in the Old Testament. I think it's a priority for the Christian community to develop a higher understanding of the character of God. (✎ R.C.Sproul)
