기독교 신앙의 가장 잘 알려진 고백중의 하나는 주기도문입니다. 그 주기도문은 “하늘에 계신 우리 아버지여,” 그와 같이 시작을 합니다. 이는 기독교 세계에 널리 알려진 중요한 한 부분이기도 합니다. 그리스도인들이 사적인 모임에서 개인적으로 기도하는 것을 보면 거의 대부분의 사람이 하나님을 아버지라고 부르면서 기도하는 것을 볼 수가 있습니다. 우리 그리스도들에게 있어 가장 공통적인 사실이 있다면 하나님을 아버지라고 부르는 것입니다. 19세기에 기독교의 본질을 인간의 형제애와 하나님의 부성애 이 두 가지로 요약할 수 있다고 말한 사람들이 있었는데 가만 보면 정말 그런 것 같습니다. 그러나 자칫 예수께서 가르치신 내용 가운데 가장 중요한 가르침을 놓칠까 염려스럽습니다.

수년전 한 독일 학자가 신약문헌을 연구한 결과 전 유대주의 역사에 걸쳐(구약시대의 모든 문헌, 유대주의 시작에서 10세기에 이르기까지 이탈리아에 있는 모든 현존하는 성경 이외의 유대 문헌들) 하나님을 직접적으로 아버지로 묘사한 대목이 단 한번도 없다는 사실을 발견하였습니다. 구약성경에는 유대인들에 의해 사용된 하나님을 지칭하는 여러 적당한 명칭들이 있습니다. 그리고 아이들은 하나님을 경외하는 명칭을 사용토록 교육을 받았습니다. 이 모든 명칭들 가운데 ‘아버지’라는 명칭은 들어있지 않습니다.

하나님을 ‘아버지’라고 부른 최초의 유대인 랍비는 바로 나사렛 예수였습니다. 이는 전통과는 매우 거리가 먼 것으로 예수께서는 매 기도마다 하나님을 ‘아버지’라고 부르시고 계십니다. 그것이 또한 예수님의 대적자들이 예수님을 죽이고자 했던 이유이기도 했습니다. 즉 그는 전능하신 하늘의 하나님이 되시며 만물의 창조주가 되신 하나님과 이 같은 개인적이고 친밀한 관계를 가지셨으며 또한 감히 그 하나님과 친밀한 대화를 가지셨던 것입니다. 그보다 더 혁신적인 것은 예수님께서 사람들에게 “너희는 기도할 때 이렇게 기도하라, ‘우리 아버지여,’”라고 가르치셨다는 것입니다. 그는 우리로 하여금 전능하신 하나님의 존전에 온전히 나아가도록 하셨을 뿐만 아니라 하나님을 아버지로 부르도록 하셨습니다. 그가 그렇게 하신 것은 하나님이 진실로 우리의 아버지가 되시기 때문입니다. 하나님께서는 우리를 자신의 가족으로 입양하셨을 뿐만 아니라 우리로 하여금 그의 독생자와 함께 후사가 되게 하셨습니다.(로마서 8:17)

One of the most well-known statements of the Christian faith is the Lord's Prayer, which begins with the words "Our Father which art in heaven." This is part of the universal treasure of Christendom. When I hear Christian in a private gathering praying individually, almost every single person begins their prayer by addressing God as Father. There's nothing more common among us than to address God as our Father. So central is this to our Christian experience that in the nineteenth century, there were some who said the basic essence of the whole Christian religion can be reduced to two points: the universal brotherhood of man and the universal fatherhood of God. In that context I am afraid we have missed one of the most radical teachings of Jesus.

A few years ago, a German scholar was doing research in New Testament literature and discovered that in the entire history of Judaism - in all existing books of the Old Testament and all existing books of extrabiblical Jewish writing dating from the beginning of Judaism until the tenth century A.D. in Italy - there is not a single reference of a Jewish person addressing God directly in the first person as Father. There were appropriate forms of address that were used by Jewish people in the Old Testament, and the children were trained to address God in proper phrases of respect. All these titles were memorized, and the term Father was not among them.

The first Jewish rabbi to call God "Father" directly was Jesus of Nazareth. It was a radical departure from tradition, and in fact, in every recorded prayer we have from the lips of Jesus save one, he calls God "Father." It was for that reason that many of Jesus' enemies sought to destroy him; he assumed to have this intimate, personal relationship with the sovereign God of heaven and the creator of all things, and he dared to speak in such intimate terms with God. What's even more radical is that Jesus says to his people, "When you pray, you say, 'Our Father.'" He has given to us the right and privilege to come into the presence of the majesty of God and address him as Father because indeed he is our Father. He has adopted us into his family and made us coheirs with his only begotten Son(Rom.8:17).
