쉴만한 물가

아마도 기독교의 하나님만이 가지고 있는 가장 독특한 특성이 있다면 그가 존재한다는 사실일 것입니다. 다른 신들은 존재하고 있지 않습니다. 물론 이는 우리 모두가 아다시피 큰 논쟁거리가 되는 것이기도 합니다.

  궁극적으로 기독교의 하나님에게 해당되는 가장 두드러진 특성이 있다면 ‘거룩함’이라고 말할 수 있을 것입니다. 이 문제 또한 다른 신들 역시 거룩하다고 주장하는 사람들과 논쟁거리가 될 것입니다. 세상의 모든 종교 가운데서 오직 기독교에만 해당되는 중심 되는 교리가 있다면 단 한 번의 속죄로 인간에게 구원이 주어지게 되었다는 것입니다. 구약의 유대교가 대속물을 제시하고 있는 반면에 대부분의 종교들은 대속물을 제시하고 있지 않습니다. 이는 근본적으로 구원을 위해 무엇인가 선행되어야 한다고 생각하고 있지 않기 때문입니다.

  내가 갖는 의문은 여기에 있습니다. 만일 세상의 종교들이 하나님을 거룩한 분으로 생각하고 있다면 그 종교들은 왜 속죄의 필요성을 생각지 않고 있는가 하는 것입니다. 만일에 하나님은 완전하게 의로우신 분이시고 인간은 완전하게 의롭지 못하다면 그러면서도 인간이 하나님과 관계를 가지기 원한다면 여기엔 근본적인 문제가 대두됩니다. 어떻게 거룩하고 의로운 신이 그 면전에서 의롭지 못한 피조물을 용납할 수 있습니까? 그것이 바로 유대교와 기독교가 인식하고 있는 근본적인 문제점입니다.

  의롭지 못한 인간이 거룩하신 하나님의 존전에 나아가려면 어떻게든 의로워져야만 합니다. 그것이 바로 유대 기독교의 전 관심이 속죄에 집중하는 이유입니다. 왜냐하면 속죄만이 화해를 가져오기 때문입니다. 그러나 만일 하나님이 거룩하시다고 믿지 않는다면 굳이 화해의 개념이 필요치 않을 것입니다. 이런 경우 우리는 마음대로 살 수가 있습니다. 왜냐하면 그 신은 우리의 모든 죄를 무시하고 우리가 원하는 모든 것을 들어주는 우주적인 심부름꾼 같은 존재에 지나지 않기 때문입니다. 하나님의 거룩함, 그것이 기독교의 하나님과 다른 종교의 신들과의 근본적인 차이라고 말할 수 있습니다.

Perhaps the most unique characteristic of the Christian God is that he exists. The other ones don't. Of course, that is a matter of profound debate, as we all know.

  I would say the chief and most critical differences have to do, ultimately, with the Christian God's character of holiness. You're going to get an argument on this from other people who will say that their gods are holy, too. What is unique about Christianity among all the world religions is its central doctrine of a once-for-all atonement that is offered to people to grant them salvation. Old Testament Judaism had a provision for the atonement of sin, but most religions have no provision for an atonement, basically because they do not consider it to be a prerequisite for redemption.

  My question is, Why would a world religion not consider an atonement necessary for redemption unless, in their view, God is less than holy? If God is perfectly just and people are not perfectly just, yet those people are trying to be in vital relationship with God, you have a basic, overwhelming problem. How would a God who is holy and just accept in his presence unjust creatures? That's what Judaism and Christianity understand as the vital problem.

  Human being who are unjust must be justified somehow to enter the presence of a holy God. That's why the whole focus of Judeo-Christianity is at the point of atonement, which brings about reconciliation. But if you don't believe that God is all that holy, there's no need for any concept of reconciliation. We can live however we want because this kind of god is a cosmic bellhop who will overlook all of our sins and do whatever we want him to do for us. I would say the holiness of God is the vital difference.
