어떤 의미에서는 모든 인간은 성령을 이미 받았다고 말할 수 있습니다. 구속(救贖)이라는 측면, 즉 크리스천들이 성령을 받는 것에 대해 말할 때 주로 사용되는 의미에서가 아니라, 크리스천들이 살아서 숨쉬고 있다는 의미에서 말입니다. 성경은 말씀하기를 우리가 살아 있을 수 있는 힘 그 자체가 성령이라고 합니다. 사도바울은 마스(Mars)신의 언덕1) 에서 아덴의 철학자들에게 "우리가 그를 힘입어 살며, 기동하며, 있느니라 (사도행전 17: 28 전반부)"라고 말했습니다. 기독교신학의 역사에 있어서, 이 세상에서의 삶의 원칙이 바로 성령이라는 것과 어떤 누구도 하나님의 생명의 근원인 성령님을 소유하지 않고서는 살아갈 수 없다는 사실은 실상 너무나도 보편적으로 받아들여졌던 개념이었습니다. 그러나 이것은 구속적인 의미가 아닙니다. 즉, 우리가 회심 혹은 거듭남을 통해, 혹은 성령세례를 통해, 혹은 성령님이 내주하심과 같이 "성령을 받는다"고 할 때의 의미를 일컫는 말이 아닙니다. – 이는 성령의 역사하심, 성령의 독특한 사역들을 통해서 이해될 수 있는 개념입니다.

  예, 인간이 하나님의 형상을 따라 빚어졌다라고 하는 사실을 기억한다면, 모든 인간은 성령을 받을 수 있는 가능성이 있습니다. 비록 우리가 실패함에도 불구하고, 모든 인간은 성령님이 내주하실 수 있는 그릇으로 사용될 수 있습니다. 그 어떤 개인도, 어떠한 모임도, 인종, 성별도 성령님이 우리를 찾아오시는 것을 방해할 수 없습니다. 성령 하나님은 어떤 인간에게라도 그가 원하시면 찾아가시고, 거듭나게 하시고, 그리고 그 안에서 내주하실 수 있습니다.

Does every human being have the potential to receive the Holy Spirit?

There is a certain sense in which every human being already has the Holy Spirit. Not in the redemptive sense- the sense in which Christians normally speak about having the Holy Spirit- but in the sense that they are alive. The Bible tells us that the power for life itself is grounded in the Holy Spirit. Paul said to those philosophers at Mars Hill, "In him we live and move and have our being." In the history of Christian theology it’s been a virtually universal idea that the life principle in the world is the Holy Spirit, and no one can even be alive without at least having the life source of God, the Holy Spirit. But that’s not the redemptive sense in which we talk about having the Spirit by conversion or regeneration or being indwelt with the Holy Spirit or baptized in the Holy Spirit-these are distinguishable works of God the Holy Spirit. 

  You ask, "Does every human being have the potential to receive the Holy Spirit?" Let’s talk about the Holy Spirit in terms of his entering into a life to regenerate- to convert a person and dwell in that person in a saving way. Does every human being have the potential to receive the Spirit in that regard? Well, now let me sound like a confused modern theologian by saying yes and no.

  Yes, in the sense that every human being has the potential to receive the Holy Spirit insofar as human beings are made in the image of God. Even though we’re fallen, every human being has the capacity to be a receptacle of the indwelling Holy Spirit. There’s nothing about one person or one group of people or one race or one sex that makes them lack the potential to be visited by the Holy Spirit. God the Holy Spirit can come and regenerate and dwell within any human being he so desires.

  Yes, there is this innate or intrinsic potential for every human being to be filled with the Holy Spirit or regenerated by the Holy Spirit. But the Holy Spirit goeswhere he wills and where the Father sends him and where the Son sends him, and I don’t believe that God sends the Holy Spirit to regenerate everybody. They will not be regenerated whom the Holy Spiritis not sent to regenerate. And so if God does not choose to indwell a person by the Holy Spirit, that person will not be indwelt by the Holy Sprit.
